DEPARTMENT of COMPUTER SCIENCE


Name

Article I

The name of this organization shall be the Department of Computer Science.

Purpose

Article II

  • Provide a management unit for teaching the Computer Science curriculum at Old Dominion University;
  • Promote opportunities for research by faculty and students;
  • Provide an information platform between the Administration and the Department of Computer Science Faculty;
  • Promote communication and understanding among the faculty and students of the Department of Computer Science within and without other units of the University, community, industry and government.
  • Provide for the establishment of committees for handling of various students, staff and faculty matters;
  • Coordinate budgetary matters for the units of the Department.

Membership

Article III

  • The voting membership shall consist of all full-time faculty members of the Department and the Chair of the Department of Computer Science.
  • The Chair or his designated representative shall be the presiding officer.

Faculty Committees

Article IV

  • There will be four standing committees consisting of full-time faculty:
    a.Undergraduate Program
    b. Graduate Program
    c.Tenure
    d.Promotion
  • The Tenure Committee shall consist entirely of Tenured Faculty. The Promotion Committee shall consist entirely of full professors. Membership on the Tenure Committee and the Promotion Committee shall be determined by vote of the faculty.
  • Members of the other standing committees shall be appointed by the Chair upon the recommendation of the Assistant Chairs.
  • The Chair shall, by consultation with the Assistant Chairs, obtain nominations for additional Ad-hoc Committees.

Meetings

Article V

  • Regular meetings of the Department of Computer Science faculty called by the Chair during the first month of each academic year. Other meetings may be called by the Chair or upon the recommendation of the Assistant Chairs.
  • The time, place and agenda of meetings shall be announced by the Chair in writing to each full-time faculty member at least one week in advance.
  • Items to be placed on the agenda may be introduced through faculty to the Chair. New items introduced from the floor shall be channeled to the Assistant Chair for further consideration.
  • A quorum shall consist of at least 1/3 of the voting membership of the Department of Computer Science.
  • The by-laws may be amended by a simple majority of the voting membership.
